The launch of The World in Winter annual world music festival for Bristol has been delayed by the worldwide credit squeeze. Commercial sponsorship, never easy to obtain even in the best of times, has disappeared. We have tried other funding sources for a small-scale launch in February 2010, but it was not viable. We are postponing the launch until February 2011, with the aim of restoring it to a full-scale event – 10 days including two weekends. An exciting new world music festival for Bristol, UK that flows from the heart of communities across the globe.
It is timed, like the carnival in Venice, to bridge the gap between the shortest day and the start of spring. The time when we need something special to cheer us up as we live through the cold and the long dark nights.
The World in Winter will have unique character and appeal. It will showcase artists and ensembles that are new to Bristol -- providing an opportunity to experience performances that are not included in the touring repertoire. The first edition will be a celebration of love, themed around St Valentine's day and including Sufi music.
The venue is St George's, a converted church on a hill, above the city centre. It is renowned worldwide for its superb acoustic. It is an elegant environment with a friendly atmosphere and a great bar and restaurant.
Alongside the concerts there will be film shows, Master Classes and educational activities in schools.
Other proposed events include a waterfront torchlight carnival, a dance party, a festival club and performances by Bristol-based musicians. The festival will grow year on year, with new features added as resources become available.
